The cultured dairy products category includes cottage cheese, sour cream, cream cheese and dips. Some of
these products are positioned as cooking ingredients and condiments, others are for enjoyment all by themselves.
Refrigerated dairy-based dips - made with cream cheese or sour cream, or both - have been booming, as they
complement the snacking trend. Cottage cheese, the original high-protein dairy food, has become very popular
this past year thanks to social media. Circana data showed that unit sales of private label cottage cheese were up
5.7% in 2023, as compared to the previous year. Branded unit sales were up 11.7%.
New cream cheese flavors
Philadelphia Cream Cheese, a brand of Kraft Heinz, Chicago, has
two new flavors in its whipped lineup. French onion features a
blend of savory and umami onion flavors, and was developed as a
dipping option for crackers, chips and vegetables. There's also a new
chipotle variety with hints of smoky chilies followed by a bit of heat.
Additionally, the brand brought back limited edition seasonal pumpkin
spice for the autumn months.
Lactose-free lineups
In efforts to attract consumers who may avoid dairy because of
lactose intolerance or sensitivity, Prairie Farms Dairy, Edwardsville,
Ill., now offers lactose-free cottage cheese and sour cream in 16 oz
tubs. The company adds lactase to the milk to break down lactose
into galactose and glucose, monosaccharides that are easier to digest.
Farmer-owned Hiland Dairy Foods, Springfield, Mo., has also added
lactose-free options of cottage cheese and sour cream in 16 oz tubs to
its local dairy lineup. These products are made with lactase enzyme,
which breaks down lactose, making them easier to digest.
Summertime flavors
Private label retailer Aldi Corp., Batavia, Ill., offered two summertime
swicy (sweet and spicy) cream cheese and sour cream-based dips.
Pineapple Jalapeno and Sweet Chili Mango came in 10 oz containers.
