adventures
When I began my career at Sosland Publishing in 2019, one of
my colleagues told me that this job would change the way I
look at food and the way that I would shop.
I didn't quite understand that sentiment at first, but it
didn't take long before what she told me became clear.
Writing about the commercial dairy industry has not only
made me a more educated consumer, understanding how
food is processed and then moved through the supply chain,
but it has made me a far more adventurous grocery shopper.
For me, grocery shopping is no longer simply a to-do task;
it has become somewhat of a food safari.
I often find myself slowly perusing the dairy aisle, taking
my time familiarizing myself with brands and products (often
much to the dismay of my husband). I always make an effort
to leave the store with at least one new-to-me product to test
out at home, with the chance that it might make the cut to
take up some precious refrigerator space.
Labneh, for example, was a foreign product to me a year
ago. But at the urging of another food adventurer, and as a
lover of Mediterranean cuisine, I decided to give it a go. Now
it's a part of my regular shopping rotation.
However, while I find it exciting
to try what's new in the dairy case,
I am also an avid consumer of what
I dub 'core' products. Opening my
refrigerator at any given moment, you
will find milk, cheddar cheese, butter,
sour cream, yogurt and cottage
cheese. Products I grew up with,
products I use to cook and products I
feel good about eating.
My adventures in grocery
shopping have reminded me that there is always room for the
old and the new. It's just about finding the right balance.
