WHY DEDICATED
ON-SITE MAINTENANCE
MAKES SENSE
By Doug Adamson,
Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Transervice Logistics Inc.
DAIRY PROCESSING FLEETS have been hit with a lot lately.
Trucks on the road today are more sophisticated and require
diagnostic expertise that was not needed in the past. In addition,
supply chain issues are delaying the delivery of new assets to
replace older trucks and many fl eets are operating their trucks
and trailers well past their typical retirement dates. These
two forces have put incredible pressure on the maintenance
departments at fl eets. And that is before we even mention the
shortage of qualifi ed technicians to work on today's trucks and
the trucks of the future.
Savvy fl eets are looking at new models for their maintenance
needs. Dedicated on-site maintenance is one model that is
attracting a great deal of attention. Using the business model for
dedicated on-site maintenance, Transervice remains on-site at the
fl eet's facility working in the fl eet's shop with technicians employed
by Transervice. All maintenance and repair at the facility are focused
solely on your fl eet's vehicles freeing you from both the burden of
maintenance and repair and from having to go to a dealership or
repair garage where you will have to wait in line for service.
There are a number of reasons why switching to an onsite
dedicated maintenance model makes sense for a dairy
processing fl eet.
* Technician training: Transervice is committed to ensuring
that its technicians are properly trained. The company has
an ASE certifi cation program that its technicians can take
advantage of. The vast majority of Transervice techs have at
least one ASE certifi cation and some are certifi ed as master
technicians. The company encourages and incentivizes its
techs to continue to pursue ASE certifi cation.
* Technician assessment: Many fl eets considering a move to
dedicated on-site maintenance are concerned about what
will happen to their existing techs. Transervice prefers to keep
your fl eet's existing techs and employs a prequalifi cation
process to assess the skill sets of existing technicians to
determine retention potential. Transervice has experience
taking over both union and non-union shop operations.
* Tooling and equipment: When Transervice fi rst comes into
your shop, it assesses your existing tooling and equipment.
It keeps existing tooling and equipment but adds any other
required tools and equipment necessary to work in-house
on your vehicles. The company especially focuses on
having the right diagnostic equipment. It can be diffi cult for
a dairy processing fl eet to keep up with the ever-changing
diagnostic tools and software needed to understand fault
codes to ensure quick and complete repairs.
* Managed parts inventory: Transervice takes over the
responsibility for managing the fl eet's parts inventory. In
addition, because of its size it has national purchasing
power so typically can purchase parts at a lower cost than
the fl eet can.
* Liability: When Transervice takes over a shop, it brings with
it Garagekeepers insurance and takes on the responsibility
for all repairs performed in the shop by its technicians.
* Reduced HR burden: Since Transervice takes on the
responsibility for the technicians, there are fewer people
on your payroll. This means decreased worker's comp
payments and state employment taxes, etc.
Dairy processing fl eets have several options with the
dedicated on-site maintenance model. The deal can be
structured so the fl eet is charged for all labor and overhead
including shop tools and equipment and diagnostic equipment.
The costs are calculated on a monthly basis as a guaranteed
labor program with parts billed separately as they are used. With
the other option, called guaranteed maintenance, the fl eet is
charged a fi xed cost to cover overhead and then a cost per mile
that covers repair costs.
Fleets that want to rid themselves of the burden of the assets
themselves can move to a full-service leasing model. Under this
model, Transervice acquires the equipment and leases it to the
fl eet with all the maintenance as part of the lease.
Transervice has the diagnostic capabilities and a long
history of success transitioning maintenance and repair to an
on-site dedicated maintenance platform. It may be time to
consider moving your maintenance and repair to the experts at
Transervice.
