Keeping up
I remember when my best friend got her first flip camera
phone during our junior year of high school. It was 2003 and
the idea of having a phone that could do more than make
and receive phone calls was a mind-blowing technological
advancement. I still have a copy of the first selfie we took on
that camera phone (before the 'selfie' was even a thing) in a
box somewhere - a grainy photo of two 16-year-olds who had
no idea how ahead of the time their photo technique was.
Looking at that photo now, 20 years later, I am in awe of
how far technology has come and how quickly it happened.
As I grew up, technology grew with me. Smartphones, tablets
and smart watches are now ubiquitous in our day-to-day,
but in the not-so-distant past were completely new and
cutting-edge. But, regardless of how common any technology
becomes, there are still people - and companies - that
are hesitant to adapt to change. And that can create more
problems than it avoids.
In this issue, you'll read about how failure to adapt and
accept new advancements can be detrimental to a company's
future. A number of dairy companies are modernizing their
operations and using data to increase efficiencies and supply
chain logistics. Automation, digital
tools and even artificial intelligence
are helping processors streamline,
increase output and prioritize food
and worker safety. But those who
are resistant to change run the risk
of falling behind. Becoming obsolete
can happen quicker than anyone
might realize.
As for me, I'll be hanging on to
that 20-year-old selfie as a reminder
that while change doesn't necessarily happen all at once, it
can happen quickly, and we should be open to embracing it
as it does.
