The refrigerated cup is the most popular yogurt format in the United States. Other options include pouches and
tubes, as well as drinkables, most of which are targeted to children. The entire refrigerated yogurt segment had
retail sales of $9 billion for the 52 weeks ending April 2, 2023, according to Circana (formerly IRI), Chicago. The
category had aggressive dollar growth (+12.5%) during this time period due to above-average levels of inflation;
unit sales were down (-6.4%). Just for the month of March, dollar sales were up 12.7% vs. March 2022, and unit sales
improved (-3.4%), suggesting that inflation is slowing in the yogurt category and consumers are continuing to eat
it up. They can find new innovations not only in the dairy case, but also in the freezer and produce department.
Yogurt smoothies
Orlando-based DAH!, a company that manufactures India-inspired
yogurts known as lassi, now offers probiotic-rich, 7-oz single-serve
yogurt smoothies in Alphonso mango and vanilla cardamom flavors.
Lassi is prepared at a lower temperature for a longer period of time-
as compared to traditional yogurt-yielding a smooth and intensely
flavorful product. The company gave attendees at the Natural Products
Expo West show a sneak peek at its Immunity Super Boost Strawberry
Lowfat Yogurt on-the-go. The shelf-stable pouch product contains a
microgel vitamin and mineral complex that includes immune-boosting
ingredients.
Frozen yogurt pops
Wells Enterprises Inc., Le Mars, Iowa, is introducing Halo Top Frozen
Yogurt Pops in strawberry and triple berry varieties. The 2.25-oz bars
are sold in packs of four and are marketed as " the perfect mix of
creamy Icelandic-style skyr yogurt, crunchy granola and real fruit in
every bite. " The ingredient statements list ultrafiltered milk first. The
formulation contains a number of dairy ingredients, including nonfat
yogurt made with milk protein concentrate, skim milk, whey powder
and milk. One bar provides 110 calories, 3 grams of fat, 15 grams of
sugar (13 grams are added) and 4 grams of protein. The company also
claims the bar is loaded with probiotic cultures.
