COMMENTARY
The old,
the new
The story of dairy seems to be a constant balance between
tradition and modernization. Trying to maintain an identity,
while also embracing the future.
Images of red barns and holsteins in fields contrasts
against the nearly $750 billion industry made up of engineers,
scientists, technology experts and marketing superstars.
In May, the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA)
and Dairy.com by EverAg hosted the inaugural DairyTech
conference in Austin, Texas. The conference didn't focus on
dairy processing or products, per se, but rather a key factor
in successful and secure operations - technology.
Throughout the supply chain, technology is changing
the way the dairy industry operates. IT infrastructure and
cybersecurity aren't exactly front of mind when thinking
about dairy. But IT is amongst a host of other integral day-today
business operations that are crucial in ensuring products
are produced efficiently and safely.
Our featured processor in this issue, Organic Valley, is
a prime example of balancing traditional and progressive.
Started in the late 1980s by a collective of small family farms,
Organic Valley has managed to maintain its mission and
connection to smaller organic and
family farms, while becoming one
of the nation's largest farmer-owned
organic cooperatives, and one of the
world's largest organic consumer
brands.
Modernization is everywhere
in the dairy industry, buidling
upon established foundations in
food safety, health and business
operations. By using technology to
improve and move forward, while still staying committed to
visions and missions, the industry will continue to excel.
