COMMENTARY
Passion for
the craft
In early March, I attended the 2022 World Championship
Cheese Contest in Madison, Wis. The event, which is hosted
by the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association every two
years, had nearly 3,000 entries from around the world, which
were submitted to be evaluated across over 140 different
categories to determine the best of the best. A convention
hall full of top-notch cheeses and dairy products to try? I
think that's what they call " job perks. "
I was amazed, not just by the technicalities and
intricacies involved in judging such a competition, but the
passion shown by the judges, volunteers and, of course,
the competitors. It reminded me that what makes the dairy
industry so dynamic is the dedication and passion processors
have for creating the best products possible.
Our featured processor in this issue is Dreyer's Grand Ice
Cream, which has been creating sweet treats for nearly 100
years and have committed to investing hundreds of millions
of dollars to keep innovating and bringing new products to
market. The team at DGIC has that drive and passion for
what they do and aim to make that obvious to the consumers
who buy their products.
It's that passion that also drives
smaller operations to grow, like
High Road, Bellwether Farms and
Good Culture, which you can read
about in " Reaching the next level. "
It's also what keeps organic dairy
processors, such as those in our
" Organic Growth " story, striving to
create quality products with a focus
on animal welfare.
There is a lot that goes into
running a prosperous dairy processing operation at any level.
But passion will always be the secret ingredient to success.
