The US milk industry is a $15 billion category with 90% penetration, according to John Talbot, chief executive
officer of the California Milk Advisory Board. Historically milk processing plants focused on one thing - fluid
milk - maybe juice, and even at times water. That is changing. Today's milk processing facilities are not only
equipped with technologies to produce refrigerated beverages, with or without an extended shelf life, many have
aseptic capabilities that allow for shelf-stable (dairy and non-dairy) beverages. In terms of packaging, innovative
processors are investing in new forms and sizes to make sure their beverages are accessible and convenient
anywhere and at any time.
Protein smoothie pouches
Designer Wellness, Carlsbad, Calif., markets the Designer Whey brand
of protein powders, along with self-stable Designer Wellness Protein
Smoothie pouches. A 4.2-ounce serving contains 12 grams of whey
protein isolate and contains no added sugars. In addition to being
made with real fruit, Designer Smoothies also contain medium-chain
triglyceride oil, which is purported to improve brain and memory
function, as well as other wellness benefits.
Gnubees smoothie pouches
GnuSanté Creations Inc., Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, is
bringing shelf-stable Gnubees Kids and Gnubees Plus smoothie
pouches to the US. The company explains that it uses whey protein
isolate in its products because it is a complete protein as it contains
all nine of the essential amino acids for healthy growth. Gnubees Kids,
formulated for children under two years, is made with fruit juices, milk,
whey protein isolate and chicory root inulin. Each 6.4-ounce pouch
contains 6 grams of dairy protein and 3 grams of fiber. With Gnubees
Plus, each 8.5-ounce pouch contains 8 grams of grass-fed whey
protein and 4 grams of prebiotic soluble corn fiber. These larger
smoothies are intended for consumers more than eight-years old.
