What's
Next?
Everyone has a TV show they could watch over and over
without tiring. For me, it's " The West Wing, " which aired from
1999 to 2006. In the show, President Barlett, played by Martin
Sheen, often asks his staff, " What's next? " in order to swiftly
move the day forward, focusing on the tasks ahead, rather
than dwelling on what's already done.
The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) held
its annual Dairy Forum at the end of January in Palm Desert,
Calif., with a focus on what's " New, Now, Next " for the dairy
industry. As IDFA president and chief executive officer
Michael Dykes gave his opening keynote about where US
dairy is heading in the next year, I couldn't help but think of
President Bartlett's, " What's next? "
The answer? A lot. Sustainability, health and wellness,
a competitive marketplace and pricing model, and an
investment in people - these topics were front and center
throughout the course of Dairy Forum and for good reason.
These are the spaces in which the industry will be putting its
time and money in the coming years to further advance the
position of the US dairy market as a global industry leader.
Companies like Tillamook County Creamery Association,
our featured processor in this issue,
continue to put care into products
while upholding its core values
and stewardship in its community.
Likewise, other processors are
finding ways forward in a market
that is becoming increasingly less
traditional and doing so successfully.
It's a new year and with the
flipping of the calendar comes new
opportunities. So, in order to forge
ahead in an everchanging industry, don't forget to stop every
once in a while and ask, " What's next? "
